After 100 championships, this Grey Cup has some tales to tell. In the style of “It Was a Very Good Year”, I present this reflection on a few of the games the old trophy has seen. I hope you enjoy it.
It Was 100 Very Good Years When I was seventeen It was a very good year It was a very good year for the Tigers and the forward pass The stock market crash didn’t dull my glean When I was seventeen When I was twenty-one it was a very good year It was a very good year for the Argonauts offence With all that defence Sarnia was overrun When I was twenty-one When I was thirty-six it was a very good year It was a very good year for the Stampeders at Varsity They brought a party and Ottawa was eclipsed When I was thirty-six When I was fifty-five it was a very good year It was a very good year for Canada’s centennial in the nation’s capital Joe Zuger was intractable The Tiger-Cats arrived When I was fifty-five When I was sixty-five it was a very good year It was a very good year for staples in shoes The Eskimos had the blues And the Alouettes thrived When I was sixty-five When I was seventy-seven it was a very good year It was a very good year for 43-40 picks Ridgway made the kick Saskatchewan was in heaven When I was seventy-seven When I was eighty-two it was a very good year It was a very good year for the BC Lions defeating the Baltimore giants All had a good view When I was eighty-two When I was one hundred it was a very good year It was a very good year for Argo double blue Ricky Ray came through Toronto thundered When I was one hundred Now the days are short It’s the autumn of the year Another group will drink vintage wine from my brim and place kisses on my rim, and it pours sweet and clear It was a very good year It’s been a mess of good years
